Commentaire:

The show initially received luke-warm reviews, but it attracted reasonable audiences. There were rumours of a number of backstage squabbles, and at the end of February Toyah Wilcox was brought in to replace Kelly Hunter. The show suddenly closed on Friday May 1st 1987 after a strike following the sacking of five out of the 13 orchestra members. The show had been blighted with a number of difficulties, including a serious breakdown in the orchestra’s relationship with Wayne Sleep, who accused them of interfering with his performance and alleged they were guilty of drunken and bawdy behaviour. The final performance (Friday May 1st 1987) was played with no musicians, and subsequent negotiations failed to resolve the problem. After the show ended a whole series on unpaid bills came to light, and 3 years later the main backer, William Hancock, was declared bankrupt with total debts of over £5 million.  (plus)

An absolute delight, this show received mountains of praise, but a whole evening of parody of film and musical theatre could only truly be enjoyed by an audience who understood what was being parodied. After 268 performances it finally ran out of audience.  (plus)

This production was created at Leicester Haymarket under the management of Cameron Mackintosh who, with Arts Council support, was determined to created regional touring product of the highest quality—so that “West End shows” would be available to provincial theatres with no drop in standards. When the show arrived in the West End the critics felt it was equally as good as first time round.  (plus)

Based on T.S.Eliot’s children’s book “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”. Originally Judi Dench was cast as Grizabella but she suffered a leg injury during rehearsals and was forced to leave the show. The lyrics for fragments of T.S.Eliot’s verse, and the song became one of the greatest hits of the 20th Century, with over 600 different recordings. In January 1996 “Cats” became the
longest running UK musical up to that time, overtaking “Chorus Line”, when it achieved its 6,138th performance. On June 19th 1997 it became the longest running show to date in New York.
It played a total of 8,949 performances in London. Its final performance was on its 21 st birthday, 11 May 2002, and broadcast on a large screen in Covent Garden to the delight of fans who could not acquire a ticket for the final performance. Based on the 1910 novel “Le Fantome de l’Opera” ” by Gaston Leroux, “Phantom” began previews on September 27, 1986 and opened on October 9th. The production, still playing at Her Majesty's, celebrated its 24th anniversary in October 2010 and its 10,000th performance at the matinee on 23rd October 2010. It is the second longest-running West End musical in history behind Les Miserables.
“Phantom” won the 1986 Olivier and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical, and Michael Crawford won the Best Performer Award at both ceremonies. The show has been seen in 149 cities in 25 countries, and has played to over 100 million people. With total worldwide box office sales of over £3.5 billion it is the highest-grossing entertainment event of all time. The New York production alone has grossed US $800 million, making it the most financially successful Broadway show in history.

Avec:

Michael Ball (Alex Dillingham), Ann Crumb (Rose Vibert), Kevin Colson {George Dillingham), Kathleen Rowe McAllen (Giulietta), Paul Bentley, Laurel Ford, David Greer

Commentaire:

Originally the part of Uncle George Dillingham was to be played by Roger Moore. He asked to be released during rehearsals, frankly admitting that he was not able to sing well enough, and was replaced by the Australian, Kevin Colson. The show received a largely polite reception from the London critics, and thanks to its £2 million ticket sales advance ran for over 3 years. An arrangement was made with American Equity whereby the entire British cast were allowed to perform the show on Broadway (April 8th 1990) where it ran for 377 performances, in spite of receiving savage reviews like “an endless stream of clichés and predictable rythmns”. However, it lost several million dollars in the Broadway production. Amongst London cast replacements were Michael Praed, Clare Burt, Sarah Brightman , Barrie Ingham, Simon Masterman-Smith, Grania Renihan, Helen Hobson and David Malek.  (plus)

Commentaire:

Based on the 1968 film of an Ian Fleming story, the musical version included six new songs by the Sherman Brothers, who wrote the original film songs. The musical version, adapted by Jeremy Sams, opened at the London Palladium in April 2002 and ran until September 2005 - a three and a half year run which made it the longest running show to date at the Palladium. Box office sales during this period amounted to over £70 million. (It would later open on Broadway in April 2005, receive terrible notices and run for just eight months - 285 performances - losing its entire financial investment)  (plus)

Commentaire:

After a total sell-out season at the Menier Chocolate Factory, it was revived at the Playhouse in October for what was announced as a strictly limited 12 week run. There were some cast changes for this transfer, significantly with Denis Lawson as Georges. This transfer was hugely successful so the three months was extended, and in order to boost the box office and cope with a series of extensions, the leading roles were regularly re-cast every three months. In January 2009 the replacements were Graham Norton (Albin) and Steven Pacey (Georges); in May Roger Allam played Albin and Philip Quast reprised his original role as Georges; in September John Barrowman and Simon Burke played Albin and Georges respectively; and for the final months Douglas Hodge and Denis Lawson returned to end what had been a triumphant run. It finally closed on January 2nd 2010. The production won an Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and Douglas Hodge won the Best Actor Award.  (plus)
