Marti Webb & Wayne Sleep
with Linda-Mae Brewer, Jane Darling, Andrea Durant, Linda Gibbs, Claude-Paul Henry, Andy Norman, Sandy Strallen, Paul Tomkinson
This was a show in two parts. The “song” half was a song-cycle called “Tell Me on a Sunday” - a simple tale of a young English woman in New York and the trials and tribulations she experiences through a series of unhappy love affairs. This was performed by Marti Webb. The second half was called “Variations”, a suite of variations on a theme by Paganini, and was interpreted in dance by Wayne Sleep and a team of eight dancers. (During the long run the Marti Webb role was taken over by Gemma Craven, Lulu and Liz Robertson. Wayne Sleep’s role was later danced by Stephen Jeffries, Graham Fletcher, John Meehan and Paul Tomkinson) (plus)

After 19 years at the Palace Theatre the production was moved to the smaller Queen’s Theatre (the Palace needed considerable renovation to meet safety standards). In order to fit into the new space the scenery was reduced in size and the physical production needed shrinking. The most controversial aspect of the move was the size of the orchestra. The Palace pit accommodated 21 musicians, but the Queen’s could only hold 11. The rest of the sound was provided by a computer. The Musicians Union threatened a strike, but capitulated when Cameron Mackintosh claimed the only alternative was to close the show. The critics generally agreed that the “reduced” version had suffered no loss of richness or texture, and the new orchestral sound was perfectly satisfactory thanks to the new-fangled “Sinfonia” computer. Having now been seen by more than 50 million people in 38 countries and 21 languages, “Les Mis” had now become the most successful musical of all time. (plus)

'The opening of Children of Eden in the West End of London coincided with the start of war with Iraq and one of the worst slumps in audience attendence in recent years; as a result this spectacular musical was unable to find its audience.
Mais ce n'est pas le seul problème…
A “new biblical musical” told the story of the Old Testament from the Creation until just after the Flood. In a kind of throwback to the earlier success of Stephen Schwartz’s “Godspell”, the characters appeared in cute costumes, some of them appearing as cute, furry little animals. God and Eve were portrayed as jolly black performers, and Cain’s slaying of Abel was performed “in the humdrum context of a family spat”. The scenery was domed scaffolding, with disco and laser effects, and according to one critic: “The Garden of Eden was decorated in tatty hanging drapes and was like unto the current state of Liberty’s in its carpet and fabric sales department”. With very mixed critical reaction, the general cry was “Where is the nearest Exodus”? The show lost all its investment and closed after ten weeks. (plus)

This is an adaptation of John Gay’s masterpiece by John Caird and the composer Ilona Sekacz, first performed at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1992. It opened at the Swan Theatre on 7th April and played in repertoire for the whole of the 1992 season. It then transferred to the Barbican Theatre in London, opening on the 7th April 1993.
This revival was very much in the “Les Miserables” style, and was described as “low life augmented by high camp”. (plus)

(plus)
